How To Auto Tune Tv Channels

Sep 28, 2012  I've then changed the Input source on the tv from HDMI to Antenna, and tried to autotune for channels. Nothing at all shows up at all, though. There is a manual tune facility available, but i have no idea whatsoever if this is something i should be tampering with? Feb 16, 2014  Previously, I could auto-tune a channel or several channels to watch without having to manually changing to the selected channels. With Genie, it appears my only option is to record it. If I'm watching live TV (or not) at the time I have to manually select the channel or go to the To-Do-List! Is there a way to auto-tune 'live' TV?

What you need to get Freeview

First off, make sure you can get Freeview correctly. Here’s what you need to be able to tune your Freeview TV into the Freeview channels:

1. You need to be in a Freeview coverage area. You can check by entering your postcode into the Freeview Postcode checker

2. You must have a suitable TV aerial. In most cases, you can get Freeview from a standard rooftop aerial. Indoor TV aerials are only any good if you are in a strong coverage area

3. You need to connect your Freeview TV set to your TV aerial correctly. A direct connection between TV and aerial is best, and you should not use damaged cabling or connectors / splitters that are in poor condition.

Tuning in the Freeview

Freeview is a digital TV service, so you need to tune in the digital channels. This is not the same as how you used to tune in the old analogue channels before the digital switchover.

The way that you tune in depends on the TV set that you have – Each make and model of TV set is different, and how you tune in to the Freeview channels can vary depending on the make and model that you have. If in doubt, refer to your TV set’s manual for details of how to tune in Freeview.

Here is a basic guide on how to tune in Freeview. This was completed on a Sony Bravia TV set:

Step 1: Go to the TV’s Settings menu (typically a button marked “Menu” or “Settings”

Step 2: Look for an option labelled “Digital TV Settings”, “Digital Set-up” or “Digital Channels”

Step 3: Look for an option labelled “Auto-Tune”, “Add channels” or “Scan for Channels”

Step 4: Start the channel scan. This should scan for all available channels in your area, and may look something like this:

Once you have scanned for channels, you should see a message saying how many channels have been found. Assuming you have found channels, exit the Setup screen, and you should be able to view the Freeview channels

Can’t get the Freeview channels?

If you perform a channel scan and no channels are detected, that is likely to indicate that your TV can’t get a Freeview signal. This could mean: (a) you are not in a Freeview area, (b) your aerial is not able to get a good signal, (c) you have not plugged in the aerial correctly, or (d) there is a problem with your aerial cable or aerial connectors

Not sure how to scan for channels?

Take a look in the manual that came with your TV set. All manual should explain how to add channels somewhere. Failing that, look through the on-screen menu for anything connected with “digital setup” or “adding channels”. Remember, you want “Digital” not “Analogue”

Basic steps on how to do a digital TV retune are below. Only basic steps can be provided as every TV is different and we wouldn't want to be held responsible for stuffing up the tuning of your existing channels! So you do so at your own risk. Please note that the best way to do a digital retune is by the **MANUAL TUNING** not by the ** AUTOMATIC TUNING** in the menu of your TV.

MANUAL DIGITAL RETUNE - THE BEST METHOD

The following info is basic information on retuning 1x Television. If you have digital recorders, a set top box or multiple pieces of digital equipment. You need to do a retune on EVERY piece of equipment to tune in the digital channels.

Firstly you need to locate the **MENU** button on your remote. For different brands of TV this could have a different name.

  • Sony - **Home** Button
  • Chinese Brands - **Setup** Button
  • Some Panasonic models - ** SETUP ** Button

How To Use Auto Tune

Generally, the majority of TV remotes will say MENU or SETUP. This is the button you want to press if you are feeling confident enough to do a digital retune yourself. Once you press this button you are looking for an item in the 'MENU' that says 'Manual Tuning'. For the fact that there are literally hundreds of different TV brands out there; there is no possible way of educating you on how to find the 'Manual Tuning' Option if you cannot find it. It is however, usually found by using the Up, Down, Left or Right navigational arrows on a TV remote.

Here comes the tricky part of a manual digital retune

You MUST know what channel numbers apply to your local area. Channel 7 is not on channel 7 and channel 9 is not on channel 9 etc. All the TV channels you watch have their own individual 'MUX' number between 6 - 55 (with the new 4G government restacking).

In some areas you won't go wrong and you will be able to go through these numbers one by one until the signal strength comes up high and by pressing **OK** or ** ENTER ** button the TV should now manually tune in those associated channels. However, in other regions if you're tuning in channels you don't want from transmitters that are receiving a weak TV signal from your TV antenna you will only be tuning in channels that will pixelate or break up; resulting in a situation where you will think your TV antenna now has a problem!

Unfortunately, performing a manual digital retune is the best way to do retune your digital TV. You can usually find more information on your areas's exact digital TV channel numbers by googling 'Your local area + Transmission Towers'.
